DJING AT A GIANT FUCKING FESTIVAL IS STUPID ANYWAY SO WHO CARES IF PEOPLE FAKE IT

Recently there’s been a whole load of ish around this video of Laidback Luke, Lucy Liu and some European guy  pretending to be doing stuff behind the booth at some fucking festival for noobs somewhere in USA probably, cuz that’s the noob capital of the world. People are all like “it degrades the craft of djing” and “these guys are fakers” and other butthurt shit like that. From that vantage point, where this video is taken, it certainly seems like dudes are miming djing. Thing is, 99% of people at a festival have a view more like the image above. They can’t see shit of what people are doing up there. The technicality of djing is not the fucking spectacle.  People go for the pretty lights and the chicks and bros showing their teats.

No one in the middle of a fucking swarm of 300,000 people is seeing shit. Half of them are prob like “who is on now?”. They don’t fucking know. You could prob put a fucking dummy up there and peeps wouldn’t even give a fuck.

If you’re at a fucking festival like EDC or Ultra or Hard or some other shit looking for a revelatory dj experience you are at the wrong fucking place. These dudes are just gonna play all the fucking tracks they produced (or hired someone to produce) because they have to or else the sorority girl with the crazy eyes beside you is gonna lose her shit because her and her friends have been listening to all these tracks the whole fucking 4 hour drive there.

Djing of progressive house and trance and other big room drivel is inherently boring. There is only so much a dj can do in a mix. You can see them do a heart sign from far away. That’s why they do it. Doing technical shit with nobs on the mixer goes unseen by most people. They might as well be jerking off. You wouldn’t be able to tell if they were anyway. Most djs aren’t fucking scratching and shit. What do you expect from them? Hell, even if they were scratching you still wouldn’t see shit because you would be a mile away from them.

This whole thing about people faking and prerecorded sets is understandable but people are missing the fucking point. The whole giant mega festival experience is based on artifice. If people were there for just the music they wouldn’t have to make a huge ass light show. Most people are there to do mad drugs with a shit ton of other people.

I mean if they really liked electronic music then why are they listening to the most lowest form of accessible drivel?

Brilliant!!! Sadly….its true. Like Kenny said….spot on!!!

  5. Digital DJs suck. That’s why they need these gigs so they can feel important to make up for their lack of skills, soul.

    firillz though

  7. LOL dead on. thank you for stating this brilliant opinion.

  8. Having wrote my dissertation on the future of electronic music performance this made me giggle. In all fairness it even applies to most DJ booths in large clubs – I usto spend about a year putting together an intricately made live set- doing stuff on the fly, real improvisation, shit ton of midi controllers I made a real effort. The problem is nobody cares their just there to get drunk. I’d be in the middle of a live set and someone would come up and request skrillex. The only real decent set I did was when I avoided the laptop and synced everything to a keytar- people can releate to that more that some douche bag throwing love hearts behind a laptop or unplugged mixer.

It’s all about the fucking technology! I can imagine disco/rock band musicians cringe while watching the pioneer turntable DJs mix records in the 80s. “Well, this is not real performance, where are the musical instruments, where’s the soul? Anyone can put a needle on a record.” Now the turntable DJs after enjoying a good run for 2-3 decades feel all butt-hurt knowing that a 12-year old can produce a high quality mix using only her iPad that she got for Christmas.

The technology marches on making it more and more accessible to anyone whereas in the 80s and 90s it was only available to the ones who had the dedication or the money to play with hi-end equipment.

If it IS possible to output quality sound by pressing a couple of buttons, why the fuck should the DJs complicate their lives by sticking to the old guns (e.g. analogue equipment)? Time is better spent sipping on a drink and dancing around. No one REALLY appreciates seeing your hands do the “hard work” from 100 meters away.

  10. You know what, you got a point!

  11. You guys are all retarded, people don’t go to festivals to have a technical DJ experience, they go to listen to good music and have a great time. If the Dj is actually mixing then great, good for him, I think that is awesome, if he isn’t WE CAN’T TELL we are in a crowd having fun listening to the music. Every week there is some pissed off editor who writes an article about how DJ’s don’t do anything, and producers just buy songs. If it is so easy why are you sitting behind your keyboard writing these completely pointless articles? That just reiterate that you have never had a moment of real fun in your life. It’s just hipster garbage to sit and say “this is so gay, they can’t even see his hands he is totally faking” NOBODY CAME TO SEE THE DJ’S HANDS.

Hate to break it to all of you, but EDM=Party music you’re supposed to FUCKING DANCE TO, not sit and get butt hurt about shitty technicalities. If you have ever been to any bigger festival at all you would understand it’s about enjoying yourself, the music, and the surrounding environment.

Now do I think it’s shitty if a DJ isn’t actually DJing? Yes of course I do, they should be doing live mixes every single time, but I will never know for sure what goes on behind the booth until I’m standing in it myself and neither will you.

You’re not gonna get millions of people to suddenly think “I’m not gonna go to *festival name here* because I read an article about *DJ name here* not mixing live” It’ just won’t happen because people don’t go to shows for that kind of experience.

  12. WTF people actually agree with this nobody who for some reason feels he has any right or legit reasoning to post something about something that this douche hole has never experienced in real life or what sounds like has been to a first and last garbage mini massive with a line up of ppl trying to make it in this industry to be able to talk as if he has made any accomplishment or even to call out the music fests as if all of them around the world are this inaccurate pathetic lame way and its perceived due to what i would love to hear why he would post something like this and what was the legit reason behind something that he doesn’t understand about MUSIC and MASSIVES why majority of people that truly and actually go for the right reasons should experience an unforgettable
party that are filled with ARTISTS (not DJS) that are the only ones who my opinion deserve to be on stage cuz most likely spin at music tests and ACTUALLY love and perform spinning their own music cuz of the way something they produced and the effect it has on thousands of people, yeah why dont you post this if you ever really get anywhere close to this.. actually if you do or dont… and if you do, its a damn shame cause obviously you dont understand the concept of artists who are also DJS, producing music, and these massives, that thousands of ppl go to for a memory they are willing to pay for a shitload of money cause of something they can remember.. yeah and lmk when u understand and if you ever understand or experience a massive… fucking faggot

    pessimists like this…

DO something and change your life and the way you perceive everything cuz damn your gonna commit suicide being so negative about something so positive…

  14. Lol funny you mentioned laid back luke in this shows how much of a fuckin idiot you are.. He’s one of the most legit DJs out there.. Ya you’re right on a few things but you sound like a straight fuckin hater that probably can’t afford to go to any festival…

    • is it not laidback luke in the video? if you take the time to understand what you’re reading, you’ll see that I use that video as a departure point. not really saying that laidback luke is good or sucks. just because he’s capable of playing a crazy dj set doesn’t mean he does everytime.

  15. i agree who cares.. in the end we all just want to get some rave fairy back to our greasy tent

  16. “Lucy Liu” hahahaha dude you are a fucking riot!!

  17. I understand your disdain for EDM at festivals. Most djs will agree that the 1hr dj set concept that has been plaguing festivals and big club events for decades, is shit. Any real dj worth his or her salt, will show their true colors over a marathon set of 4-5, maybe even 8 hrs. Good luck getting a venue outside of NY, Miami, Ibiza or Berlin that will cosistently showcase headliner djs with that much time to play their set and take their audience on “the journey.” Frankie Knuckles, RIP, speaks out about this festival/club dj lineup problem in one of his last interviews with Benji B on BBC Radio 1. He challenges promoters to sign djs to an 8hr gig. (Paraphrasing) “They’re being paid thousands for the night, might as well make them work for their money.”

Speaking of the Godfather of House, let’s remember where house music was born. It was The Warehouse in Chicago, USA. At around the same time In Detroit, just the next state over, Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins and Adam X were creating what we now call techno. Calling us all noobs or calling the US the Capital of Noobs, is grossly inaccurate. Yes there has been a huge influx of young and old people finding EDM for the first time in the US thanks David Guetta and Avicii. Though, if you partied in the 90s you would remember the 2nd big wave of revelers to the EDM scene when Sasha and Digweed used to play marathon sets together at the Twilo, NY. Maybe you were too young for that? We are now experiencing the 3rd if not 4th wave if partiers to enjoy EDM here in the US. So if someone missed the first 20 yrs of the EDM phenomenon, it may seem like we’re brand new here in the US.

Lastly, as for the playing a cd for a festival crowd, it’s shit whether the crowd can tell or not. These people are paid as “professionals.” Whether people can tell or not is irrelevant. I lost all respect for Laidback Luke after seeing this video. Occasionally djs will have to do this b/c of pyrothechnics etc… For a portion of their set but if the entire set is pre-recorded then it might as well be fucking Paris Hilton behind the decks. Just like when people see a performance concert from someone who is lip syncing, it might be ok but it still isn’t as good as the real thing. People have always gone to these shows b/c of the girls and drugs. What has kept the scene alive and growing, is the quality of the music in the underground clubs. The commercial music and fare weather followers that jump from what’s hot to what’s popular, come and go. In 100yrs from today, people won’t be talking about shit djs pretending, they’re going to talk about Richie Hawtin using Traktor for the 1st time, Ableton live sets and the rise of the bedroom producer. And it’s quality music played by quality djs and producers that will keep the music alive for the next millennium.

  18. MisterDontPlay on said:

Most producers cant DJ at all. They’re specialty is programming beats, and thats really all that matters. No one gives a fuck about djs.

  19. Nobody gives a shit about djs. THey are simple a STAMP of genre and quality on an event. Most people are on mad drugs and would be happy in the car park or a tent… Which is where they spend most of their time anyway…

  20. I disagree. It should have never gotten to the point where it wasn’t about the music to begin with. The light shows should add to the experience, not distract you from the fact that the DJ isn’t doing work. We’re a dying breed but there’s still a few of us who DO go for the music, and if we want to get the EDM scene back to BEING about the music, we need to put more work into making it about the music. One should never dumb down for anyone. A DJ can still play your favorite tracks and still do work…
